🎧 Wyldflow3r Weekly

Press Play On Your Culture

Every week we dig into the stories behind the music — the facts, the surprises, and the moments that make music history so rich.

Here’s what happened last week in the Wyldflow3r universe.

🎬 Last Week’s Reel Series

“Wait… That Was WHO’S Song?”

This week we explored songs that people often assume were by different artists.

But music history loves a twist.

Some highlights from the series:

🎵 Nothing Compares 2 U
Written by Prince and originally recorded by The Family before Sinéad O’Connor turned it into a global hit.

🎵 Play That Funky Music
Written and recorded by Wild Cherry, after an audience member famously yelled for the band to “play some funky music.”

🎵 Be Thankful for What You Got
Written and recorded by William DeVaughn — despite the common misconception that it was by Curtis Mayfield.

🎵 Love TKO
Made famous by Teddy Pendergrass, but written by Linda Womack (daughter of Sam Cooke) and Cecil Womack (brother of Bobby Womack).

That’s a serious soul music family tree right there.

And no… we are not getting into that whole ordeal today.

We’ll save that conversation for Patreon. 😅

⭐ Music History Moment

The Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2026 has been announced — and several legendary Black music artists are being honored.

One announcement that made a lot of people (especially me!) smile:

🎶 The Clark Sisters are receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

For decades, the Clark Sisters have helped shape the sound of modern gospel and influenced generations of singers across gospel, R&B, and soul.

Their harmonies, arrangements, and vocal power changed gospel music forever.

Long overdue — and very well deserved.

I am very excited about this!

Congrats to Twinkie, Karen, Dorinda, and Jackie!

🎓 Wyldflow3r Academy Update

New lessons have been added to Wyldflow3r Academy (WA) this week.

We’re continuing our deep dive into the evolution of Gospel music in the 1970s and 80s, when production expanded, orchestration grew richer, and gospel music began reaching audiences far beyond the church walls.

The Gospel curriculum in Wyldflow3r Academy takes students on a full journey through the genre — from the spirituals and plantation hymns that sustained enslaved communities, to the contemporary gospel sound that continues to influence music today.

Along the way we explore the pioneers, the choirs, innovations in harmony and arrangement, and the cultural impact gospel has had on soul, R&B, and popular music as a whole.

And the journey doesn’t stop there.

The Blues module is next and will be launching very soon.

But that’s only the beginning.

Upcoming Wyldflow3r Academy Modules

🎸 Blues
The foundation of modern American music. This module explores the Mississippi Delta roots, early blues legends, and the emotional storytelling that shaped rock, soul, and R&B.

🎷 Jazz
From New Orleans improvisation to bebop innovation. We’ll explore the artists who transformed rhythm, harmony, and musical freedom.

🔥 Funk
A deep dive into the groove. From James Brown’s rhythmic revolution to Parliament-Funkadelic and the funk explosion that reshaped popular music.

🪩 Disco
The sound of the dancefloor. This module explores underground club culture, orchestration, and producers who created one of the most influential global music movements.

🎤 Hip-Hop
From Bronx block parties to a worldwide cultural force. We’ll break down the DJs, MCs, producers, and movements that built hip-hop into the most dominant genre of the modern era.

📀 Retro Soul Brothers Top 5 Countdown

Every Wednesday, we take a trip back in time with our Retro Soul Brothers Top 5 Countdown.

The countdown is pulled directly from Jet Magazine’s legendary Soul Brothers Top 20 Singles chart — one of the most important records of what Black America was listening to in real time.

Each week we spotlight the Top 5 songs from a specific month and year, bringing those moments back to life.

The presentation is inspired by classic music video shows like Video Soul, where the music, the culture, and the conversation all came together.

But there’s a twist.

If you're watching closely, you might catch a few Easter eggs hidden in the visuals.

And viewers are always encouraged to participate.

Got a month and year you'd like to see counted down?

Send it in.

We might feature it in an upcoming episode.

Because around here…

we don’t just listen to the culture.

We press play on it.
